TL;DR - BMW drives like total asshat in traffic, car catches on fire. Karma.
Last night my wife and I were driving home from a long weekend in Connecticut for her family reunion. We stopped in Frederick, MD for a bite to eat before merging on I-270 to complete the last leg of our journey.
In front of me on the on-ramp was a new-ish BMW 335i with temp tags, crawling at a snails pace. Have I ever mentioned that I hate slow mergers? As soon as I had an opening I dropped it into 4th and squirted around him at normal highway speed and proceeded up the road. About 2 miles up the road, approaching a large hill, there was slower traffic in the right lane so I moved left to pass. As we’re cresting the hill there’s a couple more cars spaced out in the right lane, and I glanced in my rear view mirror to make sure I wasn’t impeding anyone, so I hung in the left lane to get past them as well.
Suddenly, I catch a flash of movement to my right and there’s a black BMW 3 series whipping past me on the right, and cutting back to the left, barely squeezing between me and the minivan in the right lane. I ease off the throttle a bit and suddenly another BMW... with temp tags. The lethargic bastard who couldn’t merge is now whipping by me in hot pursuit of his Bravarian brother. I steal a glance in my mirror and there’s now a 5 series on my ass. As soon as it’s safe to do so, I move to the right and he takes off, chasing the other two. I would estimate all 3 to be traveling at around 100 MPH, give or take, and my wife and I watched them weave through traffic up ahead until we lost sight of them.
I commented to my wife “You know, when I see shit like that, I always kind of secretly hope to find them further down the road with their car stuffed in a ditch. Or at least pulled over. I mean, I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but still, it would be nice to see a little karma”
Well, a few more miles up the highway and there’s the lead BMW on the side of the road, smoke rolling out from under his car and hood. And it didn’t look like steam. I think he was on fire, though I didn’t stop to investigate. I guess karma was listening.

oooooh but the turbo engines are soooooo good now and they make loooooots of power.
This is why I like my engines breathing without assistance.

Yeah, it’s a shame really. BMW makes a great car, even still, but I’m not sure what possesses so many of those who buy them to drive like asshats.
Though one of them was using a turn signal while he cut traffic off repeatedly.
Twingo Tamer - About to descend into project car hell.
